MA 3 Wheel Motorcycle License Information
Q: Do I need a permit?
A: You need a motorcycle permit, but NOT before taking the Training Wheels 3W course.
Q: Why do I need a permit since I will get my Motorcycle License by completing the course?
A: There is an old law in Massachusetts stating that you need to obtain a permit before getting a license. Although this law does not make any sense, you must get a motorcycle permit (No later than 90 days from completing the class) to get your motorcycle license.
How to get your MA Motorcycle Permit
These 2 steps can be done either BEFORE or AFTER you register for a Training Wheels class.

Step 1
Set up an appointment at the RMV to get your motorcycle permit at https://atlas-myrmv.massdot.state.ma.us/myrmv/_/. At the RMV you will need to prove residency and pay the permit fee (it is a 5-10-minute appointment with no waiting).

Step 2
After your appointment at the RMV, go home and take the permit test through your online RMV portal. The RMV will provide you with information on how to access the test (The permit test link will appear on your online account after you visit the RMV).

You can study for the permit exam by reading the motorcycle manual here: https://www.mass.gov/doc/motorcycle-manual/download.
When you finish the Training Wheels 3W Rider Course the Massachusetts RMV is immediately notified that you passed the course.

If you have the permit before taking the class, you will receive a new motorcycle license in the mail within 15 business days.

ï‚· You will not have to take a Road test at the RMV.
