CT 3 Wheel Motorcycle License Information

Q: Do I need a permit?
A: You need a motorcycle permit, but NOT before taking the Training Wheels 3W course.

Q: Why do I need a permit since I will get my Motorcycle License by completing the course?
A: There is an old law in Connecticut stating that you need to obtain a permit before getting a license. Although this law does not make any sense, you are required to get a motorcycle permit (No later than 90 days from completing the class) to get your motorcycle license.

How to get your 3W Motorcycle License in CT

Step 1

You need to complete both the online e-course and the riding sessions. If you finish the online e-course prior to the riding sessions (preferred), kindly bring a screenshot OR a printed copy of the proof of completion certificate. Although we highly recommend taking the self-paced, online e-course before the riding session, you can complete it up to the end of the class.

Access to the self-paced, online e-course will be provided in an attachment to the confirmation email.

We will inform the CT-DMV that you passed BOTH the riding and e-course. You will not have to take a Road test at the CT-DMV

Step 2

  • Set up an appointment at the CT DMV to take the Motorcycle Permit test.

  • When you pass the permit test at the DMV (which is different from the e-course), the 3-wheel motorcycle endorsement will be added to your license, and you will receive a new one.

  • You do not need to bring anything from the class to the DMV. Your information is submitted to the DMV on the Monday following your class, and you can set up an appointment as early as the Thursday following your class.

  • To set up an appointment for your MOTORCYCLE PERMIT KNOWLEDGE TEST, use this link https://www.dmvteen.ct.gov/dmv/do-it-online

  • Although you do not need a permit and will get your 3-wheel motorcycle license, you still need to take the Motorcycle Permit Test (an old rule still on the CT books).
