Massachusetts Motorcycle Permit & License

You need a motorcycle permit, but do NOT need it before taking Training Wheels course.

Q: Why do I need to get a permit since I will be getting my Motorcycle License by successfully completing the course?

A: There is an old law on the books in Massachusetts stating that you need to obtain a permit before getting a license. Although this law does not make any sense, you are required to get a motorcycle permit (No later than 90 days from completing the class) in order to get your motorcycle license.

These 2 steps can be done either BEFORE or AFTER you register for a Training Wheels class.

Step 1

Set up an appointment at the RMV to get your motorcycle permit at https://atlas-myrmv.massdot.state.ma.us/myrmv/_/. At the RMV you will need to prove residency and pay the permit fee (it is a 5-10-minute appointment with no waiting).

Step 2

Go home and take the permit test through your online RMV portal.  The RMV will provide you with information on how to access the test (The permit test link will appear on your online account after you visit the RMV).

You can study the permit exam by reading the motorcycle manual here: https://www.mass.gov/doc/motorcycle-manual/download

When you finish the Training Wheels Rider Course the Massachusetts RMV is immediately notified that you passed the course.

If you have the permit before you take the class then you will receive a new motorcycle license in the mail within 15 business days.

You will not have to take a Road test at the RMV.
